This application must be submitted during the year in which exemption is sought to the property valuation administrator of the county in which the residential unit is located. Please note, you will qualify for this exemption during the calendar year in which you turn 65.

Requirements

A person or persons owning, living in and maintaining a residential unit must meet the 65 years of age requirement. If only one spouse is 65, the age requirement is met. If more than one person in the household qualifies you only receive 1 exemption.

Verification of Age: THE Date of birth of the applicant(s) must be established by a substantiating document, such as:

A. Primary Sources Of Proof Of Age
  • Valid KY Driver’s license
  • Red, White and Blue Medicare Card Issued by Social Security
  • Birth certificate or birth registration
  • Confirmation or baptismal records
  • Medical Assistance Card carrying an A or J prefix to Social Security Number
B. Secondary Sources of Proof of Age
  • Insurance policies
  • Marriage records
  • School records

Disability

Requirements

To qualify as a "disabled" taxpayer, the individual must meet ALL of the following four requirements:
  • Taxpayer must both own and occupy the property as his/her permanent residence.
  • The taxpayer must have been classified as totally disabled under a program authorized or administered by the Federal Government or by any other retirement system- it does not matter if the retirement system is located in Kentucky or outside the state- on January 1st of the year in which the application is made and maintain the disability classification through December 31st.
  • The taxpayer must be receiving disability payments pursuant to that disability classification.
  • An annual application for the disability exemption must be filed with the PVA office EVERY YEAR.
Verification of the above requirements must be established with supporting documentation, such as:

  • Original Award Letter

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Current Voter Registration form

Religious Organization Exemption

This application is to be used by institutions of religion seeking a property tax exemption for real property pursuant to Section 170 of the Kentucky Constitution. the Constitution specifically exempts all tangible and intangible personal property there is no need to use this application for these types of property.

This application is to be used by organizations, other than institutions of religion seeking a property tax exemption pursuant to Section 170 of the Kentucky Constitution. Please note, these requirements differ from the federal government’s income tax exemption requirements.

Motor Vehicle Affidavit

The motor vehicle affidavit must be completed and submitted to the PVA office when you need to remove your vehicle from the tax roll. If you have sold or moved your vehicle out of state, junked, totaled, or had your vehicle repossessed prior to January 1st of the current tax year then you may be exonerated from those taxes. If you own the vehicle on January 1st of that tax year you are responsible for taxes. You must complete the form below and provide proper proof of documentation regarding what happened to the vehicle.

  • Letter from your insurance company on their letterhead with VIN#, Make & Model and date your policy was transferred to new state of residency.
  • Closing papers from purchase of a new home
Sold Vehicle Out of State:
  • Copy of back and front of Title signed over to new owner
  • Copy of notarized Bill of Sale
  • Letter from your insurance company on their letterhead with VIN#, Make & Model and date your vehicle was dropped from policy.
Junked Vehicle
  • Receipt from the Junk/Salvage Yard
  • Junked Title (which is done through the County Clerks)
Totaled Vehicle
  • Letter from insurance company with VIN#, Make & Model and Settlement Date and Total Loss
Repossessed Vehicle
  • Repossession Notification from Lien-holder with Date of Repossession and/or Date to be Sold
The PVA is required by the state to receive a completed and signed affidavit and supporting documentation.  SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION MUST INCLUDE THE VIN NUMBER (VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER) OF THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION, TO BE ACCEPTABLE.  The motor vehicle taxes will not be removed from the tax roll until this has been submitted. When filing your tangible personal property tax return, please:

  • File with the Property Valuation Administrator by May 15th. All returns postmarked after May 15th, will be assessed for the tax plus applicable penalties and interest by the Department of Revenue.
  • There is no filing extension provision for tangible personal property tax returns.
  • Tangible personal property tax returns filed after May 15th, will not be allowed a discount.
  • Enter your Social Security or Federal Employer Identification Number on all returns, schedules, attachments and correspondence.
  • Staple all pages of each return together.
  • Sign all returns and list appropriate telephone numbers.
  • Do not file personal property tax returns with the income tax return.
  • Do not send payment with the return. Timely filed tangible returns will be billed no earlier than September 15th and payable to the county sheriff.
